Prop Taniela Tupou is set to make his injury return this week, however, it will not be with the Wallabies.

Rather, the 27-year-old will head to his country of birth to suit up for Australia A against Tonga in Nuku'alofa on July 14.

Tupou was named in the Wallabies squad for the opening two Tests of the Rugby Championship against South Africa and Argentina as he continues to recover from an Achilles injury.

Yet to feature in 2023, the Wallabies confirmed on Monday night they will look to maximise his minutes by joining the 'A' program instead of potentially coming off the bench against Argentina.

Tupou will then likely rejoin the Wallabies ahead of the opening Bledisloe Test on July 29, which will earmark his return to Test Rugby if he can get through Friday unscathed.

The Wallabies also announced Blake Schoupp and Pone Fa'amausili will officially join the squad ahead of Saturday's clash in Sydney.

Schoupp was rushed to South Africa as injury cover for James Slipper, with the co-captain dealing with a knee injury suffered at training.

Fa'amausili meanwhile serves as a straight swap for Tupou, initially named in the Australia A squad.

The Rebel has been showing off his freak athleticism and versatility for Moorahbin, lining up at number eight a fortnight ago against Melbourne Unicorns

Fellow prop Angus Bell will also be pushing for his return from a foot injury.

Bell travelled to South Africa with the team, however, coach Eddie Jones opted not to risk him as he continues his recovery from the injury suffered during the opening minutes of the Super Rugby Pacific season.

Loose forward Tom Hooper also remains in doubt after an abrupt end to his Wallabies debut.

Hooper was replaced by Pete Samu in the first half after picking up a knock on his shoulder.

The 22-year-old will likely head for scans to determine the severity of the injury, with Samu, Jed Holloway and Rob Leota amongst those in line to replace him.
