Wallabies flyhalf Ben Donaldson is backing himself to tick all the boxes to be fit for Saturday's clash with Italy in Perth.

The Western Force playmaker has resumed training with the group after missing last week's defeat to France with a calf issue.

Donaldson came off the bench to kick off the Nations Championship against Italy and pushed to be fit for the Test in Brisbane, only to be ruled out.

"I trained today, I'll train tomorrow and if I get through training, then all is good," he told reporters.

"I ran Saturday morning and did some skills as well, and it felt good, pulled up well, so train tomorrow as per normal, and then hopefully good to go."

It left the Wallabies down their two main playmaking options, with Carter Gordon also suffering a calf injury that has kept him out of the Test at HBF Park.

"If we had bigger calves, maybe we wouldn't get injured. We've both got pretty skinny little calves," Donaldson joked when asked if there was any way to prevent the pair of injuries.

"We've got a great coaching staff and great S&C so we look after ourselves, we do all the right things, and sometimes injuries happen. We don't make it easy on the coaches when they've had to go through a lot of tens over the past few years.

"There's nothing more we could do, or the staff could do, if sometimes you just get unlucky with an injury."

The injuries left debutant Declan Meredith to become the latest flyhalf thrown into the Wallabies set-up, with Donaldson praising his performance.

"I thought 'Dec' did a good job. As a 10, you understand how big an ask it is to come in against a French team, who are a pretty powerful team and they've done so well in the North for a long time now, so I thought he did a great job," he believes.

"He controlled the game very well, and you saw at halftime how he set the boys up [so that] we were in the lead at halftime.

"He's a confident fella, he had a great year with the 'Brums' this year and moving forward, he's going to take a lot of experience and growth out of that game.

"It was good to see him do well out there."
