Wallabies flyhalf Tane Edmed is eager to keep an attacking focus as he finds his feet at Test level.

Edmed started for the second time in his young Test career as the Wallabies went down 28-14 to the All Blacks in Perth.

It comes after a rocky starting debut against Argentina, which started with a chargedown kick for a Julian Montoya try before rallying to nail a 50-22.

The outgoing Waratah is fueled by the confidence from coach Joe Schmidt to play his game as he prepares for the Spring Tour.

"The kind of message [Joe] drove all week was let's not live on our knees. Let's play and let's back ourselves, and I've learned that I would rather come off playing nd trying to take opportunities rather than being in my shell and just drifting through the game," he told reporters.

"I'm still a little bit disappointed with a few of those errors, especially one before the half, kicking out in the full leads to a try. That's the sort of stuff in Test footy you can't afford to do.

"That's going to be a focus, trying to eliminate those. But as a 10, so many involvements, it is going to happen. It's kind of how you brush it off."

Edmed will have a chance to nail down the flyhalf position as the Wallabies embark on a five-match end-of-season tour at the end of the month, starting with a trip to Japan.

It's a hotly contested position, with Tom Lynagh set to return to full fitness while James O'Connor has started throughout the Rugby Championship.

"It's hard not to maybe think about [the competition]," he admits.

"I tried not to this week, just trying to worry about the moment in front of our faces and try to be as present as I could. There definitely is an opportunity there, but you've just got to try and play well consistently each week.

"That's how you develop trust with your teammates and your coaches. That's the most important thing."
