The Los Pumas media was talking all week of revenge, and Felipe Contepomi's men delivered just that with a 28-26 win against the Wallabies in Sydney - despite Joe Schmidt's men coming back from the brink to make it a grandstand finish.

In front of 41,912, the largest crowd ever at this venue since it was rebuilt, the boot of Santiago Carreras proved the difference, the flyhalf taking seven penalties to make the hosts chase the game.

The Wallabies were hindered by several basic errors, especially in the first half, with Christophe Ridley handing the men in gold 14 penalties, double that of the Pumas.

However, three tries in the final twenty minutes set up a grandstand finish, with the crowd making their voices heard to try and get the men in gold home.

Ultimately, it proved a distance too far.

The result will be a welcome one for Felipe Contepomi, with his side maintaining their composure throughout the match, even with the Wallabies coming home strong.

The frenetic feel to the match started early, with the Wallabies conceding an early penalty, with plenty of push and shove between Marcos Kremer and Tom Hooper.

Carreras scored the first points of the afternoon thanks to a penalty, but the hosts regained the lead less than a minute later with Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii barging several defenders to score his fourth try in gold.

However, a big Tane Edmed mistake off a free kick saw Julian Montoya charge down and score a try to give the visitors back the lead.

Carreras would kick an additional penalty to extend the lead further, but the Wallabies produced several barnstorming opportunities thanks to Rob Valetini and Hunter Paisami - the former knocking the ball on over the line to deny the Wallabies their second try.

The Pumas managed field possession well, pinning the hosts back in their 22, with Max Jorgensen sent to the bin for a knock down.

But the Wallabies did well to hold the visitors out, with a further Carreras penalty the only points the Pumas were able to take with the one man advantage.

The men in gold had several opportunities, with a brilliant 50/22 from Edmed coming to naught, although another lapse in composure saw Suaalii isolated, with Carreras punishing the hosts further on the edge of halftime with his fourth penalty of the afternoon.

The result saw the Pumas take a 19-7 lead at halftime, with the hosts having a lot of work to do to regain their composure.

The Pumas took the first points of the second half after replacement Angus Bell was pinged for obstruction, but Bell quickly redeemed himself with a dangerous break, though he couldn’t link up, the tenth knock on of the day by the hosts.

Another penalty to the Pumas saw Carreras nail his sixth penalty of the day, with the away fans finding their voice as the lead approached 20.

With another penalty, the hosts went to the corner to put the match beyond doubt only for Kremer to knock on as the Aussies survived.

After a seventh Carreras penalty, the Wallabies finally got some respite from the referee with Carreras sent to the bin for throwing the ball away, the Wallabies tapped and went, and Kellaway scored.

Out of nowhere, the Wallabies pounced again, with Daugunu scoring a second one minute later to cut the margin to nine.

The visitors tried to slow the game down, but the Wallabies were able to grab a second try in the 78th minute to Daugunu, setting up a grand stand finish.

With the clock red, the Wallabies had to go 90 metres to pull a match winner. However, a missed pass from O'Connor to Suaalii saw the Pumas pounce, with Carreras kicking the ball out to put the match beyond doubt.

The result sees the Pumas retain the Puma Trophy for another year, and will now head to South Africa - while the Wallabies prepare to take on the All Blacks at Eden Park.
