Ryan Lonergan, a clever, goal-kicking halfback with a crisp pass, has shown calm and compose alongside innate leadership qualities during the early stages of his burgeoning professional career.

Lonergan, and his brother Lachlan attended Trinity Catholic College, and both went on to play for Australian Schools (2016). Late that same year Ryan, while completing his year 12 studies, signed a professional contract to leap from an U18s season at Tuggeranong Vikings straight into the Brumbies program. He then went on to represent Australian U20s (2017-18) and captained the side to the IRB U20s World Championship in France.

In 2017 and still in his teens, Ryan played his first Super Rugby match, against the Chiefs in Hamilton. Lonergan admitted he was guilty of becoming "a bit complacent" after making that debut. He wasn't picked in 2018 and only made a handful of appearances the following year. Not surprisingly in 2020, when his next chance came, Lonergan grabbed it with both hands. Having waited wait four seasons to earn his first start Lonergan was simply “sensational in the No. 9 jersey” as the Brumbies thumped the Sunwolves 47-14 in Wollongong.

In 2021 Lonergan, who came into the match off the bench, kicked a 55-metre, 84th minute. “one-for-the-ages” penalty goal to secure a stunning 27-24 win over the Rebels.

In 2022 Lonergan captained Australia ‘A’ at the Pacific Nations Cup in Fiji as well as in the first two matches played away against Japan.
