Ryan Lonergan, brother of Lachlan, spent his early days at Trinity Christian School, where he would earn himself an Australian Schoolboys cap. Schoolboys representative honours would translate into a Brumbies development contract. He excelled for the Brumbies in the 2017 Super U20s competition and later that year the halfback got an unexpected tap on the shoulder to debut for the Brumbies against the Chiefs. In 2018, he captained Australia U20s to a World Rugby U20s Championship victory in France. In 2021, Lonergan kicked a plus 50m penalty to secure a nail-biting 27-24 win over the Rebels. Lonergan’s goalkicking ability for a scrumhalf is impressive, striking the ball nicely from the tee and out of hand.  He has become a true mark of consistency in the Brumbies side and often captains the team when Allan Alaalatoa is absent.

After a strong 2025 Super Rugby Pacific season, Lonergan got his maiden call-up for the Wallabies when he was included in Joe Schmidt's squad for the South African leg of The Rugby Championship.

Lonergan made his long-awaited test debut coming on to replace the injured Tate McDermott at Eden Park just 20 minutes into the first Bledisloe Cup match of 2025.
